What is the Azure Dragon?
The Azure Dragon (also called “Qinglong” in Chinese) is a majestic beast with blue-green scales and a horned head controlling the rains and waters. Along with the White Tiger, the Black Tortoise, and the Vermilion Bird, these creatures represent the cardinal directions and are believed to bring balance and harmony to the universe.
The Azure Dragon is different from ordinary dragons. In ancient Chinese culture, dragons have their families, with male and female dragons who can reproduce and kick the bucket, but the Azure Dragon is the only one in the universe. It is a unique creature that no one can replace.
Chinese Legend of the Azure Dragon
Once upon a time, on a sunny day, a kid named Hei was wandering in a dam at the Fairy Cave. Suddenly, storm clouds appeared, and strong winds blew, though there was no rain. Terrified, Hei took refuge in a nearby cave, thinking it would be a big storm. But within seconds, the wind stopped, and the storm clouds vanished without a trace. A little green snake covered in blood lying motionless at his feet. Feeling its plea for help, Hei picked it up and brought it home.
Hei’s father healed the snake’s wound using his family’s secret herb. Excited, Hei showed his little treasure to his friends.
On the night Hei showed the little snake around, a massive storm hit the Fairy Cave with thunder and lightning. People finally knew that it was not a snake but an injured Azure Dragon. A dark dragon attacked it while it was sleeping, and Hei saved it. After killing dark dragons, the Azure Dragon willingly lay down in the Fairy Cave and turned its eyes and mouth into a pond, its body into a mountain, and its nose into a road, firmly guarding the village to repay Hei’s kindness.
Japanese Legend of the Azure Dragon
The Azure Dragon is also called “Seiryu” in Japanese. Even today, many Japanese believe the Seiryu protects them from sea disasters. Kyoto holds the Azure Dragon Festival every spring and autumn to commemorate this divine beast that guards Japan.
According to Japanese legends, the Seiryu protects the east. Since Kiyomizu-dera Temple is located in the eastern part of Kyoto, Japanese people believe it is the Seiryu’s “seat temple.” Legend has it that the Seiryu stops by the Otowa Waterfall at Kiyomizu-dera for a drink while patrolling the east.
Japanese Buddhist mythology also mentions that the Seiryu is an incarnation of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the embodiment of compassion. If you drink the water from the Otowa Waterfall, you will never get illness or disaster.
